I am very excited to offer a new way for us, ICSD Pre-K staff, to communicate quickly and exchange ideas.
To start things off, we have a request from Tony. He would like your ideas on excellent nap time CD's. Please think about your favorites and jot a few down.
Post any questions or concerns you would like feedback on while you are here. Enjoy!

Tony...music...I really like playing Lady Smith Black Mambazo...really soothing African beats. Steve let me copy some really nice piano music, you could ask him he's nice. Another good one is any Ali Farka Toure. His music is beautiful and relaxing.
Thanks Rachel
Another question: Assessment!
I've been introduced to Creative Curriculum (barely). The 50 item list from the Poster seems daunting. What do Pre-K teachers use to gather this data? Does a 1-2 page sheet exist that helps you record observations that works in conjunction with the creative curriculm goals?
Hi Tony,
I've been struggling with the assessment piece of the CC, too. I know that Melissa (at least a couple of years ago) copies the Developmental Continuum for each child-(sheets that describe each objective in the steps) and simply makes notes right on there as she goes along.
I have not figured out a good way to assess, look for all of the objectives and/or decide which ones to focus on and then report it. not only that, but I find that some of the objectives overlap because I do not have the same view of them as the people that wrote them. I'd be happy to brainstorm with you in person if you like.
For music,
I really like Reza in Friendship (Guitar Music from Italy and Spain) and Chinese Lullabies (by the Beijin Angelic Choir)
I will make copies for anyone who would like them.
I would also love copies of anyone else's recommendations. I'm happy to send blank cd's to anyone who is willing to share.
Hi everyone,
What do you think of taking up the ideas of a music share via the newsletter or staff meeting.
What can I do to support this kind of a sharing? I'd be glad to be the organizer!
By the way, thanks for trying out the blog! Let's encourage more to share this way.
Quiet Time
After lunch 4-6 of my children fall asleep while most struggle with quiet time. It's improving but I wonder what else I might do. Do any of you let the non-sleepers look at books or have quiet play objects?
Sue - I think a staff music share at a Pre-K meeting could be useful and fun.
Tony,
Rest time is a challenge. I put out one book on each child's mat before they get there. They are expected to stay at their mat and look at their book until a teacher can read to them. A few do, many cannot. I try to help the students who I know will fall asleep relax first, then I move onto those that stay awake and read a story to 2-3 at a time. I found a timer works to have a few minutes of silence. I present it like a challenge and do not set the timer for more than 4 minutes to finish the rest time. They do pretty well with this. I also try to split up the room into the sleeper area and the wiggly area.
